Few people know that Jitendra Kumar, the inspector-general of police of Bhagalpur zone, is the best shooter among the state cops.

Kumar, his batchmates said, has never missed the target. The 1993 batch IPS officer mostly prefers to handle pistol for shooting.

“Shooting with a pistol is considered to be a tough affair because it is small. Hitting the target with it is difficult as it requires not only regular practice but also a lot of perseverance,” said a senior officer.

Kumar, who was posted with the country’s elite force — Special Protection Group — before returning to Bihar from the central deputation about three years ago, has been assigned to monitor the preparations for the Sachidnand Akhauri Inter Shooting Competition.

Kumar, sources said, had earlier provided valuable tips to the shooters selected for the All India Police Duty Meet (shooting), held at Bhubaneswar in Odisha last year. They performed well but missed the bronze by a whisker.

The Sachidanand Akhauri Inter Shooting Competition would be organised on the premises of second battalion of the Bihar Military Police (BMP) at Dehri-on-Sone in Rohtas district. The battalion’s commandant, Ratna Mani Sanjeev, told The Telegraph that the competition would be held from February 12 to February 16.

The participants would hit the targets with rifles, light machine guns, pistols and 9mm carbines. Pritam Ekka, a subedar in the BMP’s second battalion, would coach them.

Commandant Sanjeev said director-general of police Abhayanand would be present at the concluding function.
