Cool golf tourney starts amid political heat - Over 250 players to participate in 42nd edition of prestigious annual event

Patna Golf Club would organise the 42nd Patna Annual Golf Championship from Friday, the day high voltage drama is expected in the Assembly during the floor test of the Jitan Ram Manjhi-led state government.

The annual feature of the club would be a three-day affair. Over 250 golfers from Danapur, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Benaras, Jamalpur and Calcutta would participate in it.

When Manjhi and Nitish Kumar would be locked in an absorbing political battle in the House, roughly 2km away seniors, women and 19-24 handicap golfers would slog it out on the Patna Golf Club greens on Friday - the first of the prestigious tournament. The day-two will witness some serious action with 18-hole tournament of 0-18 handicap golfers. The last day would be dedicated to stableford nine holes tournament.

'We are celebrating our 99th anniversary and about to step into our centenary year. To celebrate the 100th year, we shall organise tournaments over the year. This is our second major event of the year, marking the beginning of grand celebrations,' said Mohit Ahluwalia, the secretary of the club.

The Patna Golf Club, established on March 21, 1916, had recently organised another golf tourney. The club's land originally belonged to the government of Bihar and Odisha. It was leased out to the South Bihar Gymkhana Club, which was later rechristened as Patna Golf Club.

To encourage the participation in the annual tournament, the club is highlighting the possibility of grabbing an office space in Noida. Altogether, 12 prizes are up for grabs.

'This year, we have an exquisite prize sponsored by Vascoda Housing and Reality for hole-in-one - an office space of around 200sqft near Greater Noida. In the last tournament, none of the golfers could do hole-in-one, so the prize has been carried forwarded to this tournament. Apart from this bumper prize, we have prizes for the winnersrunners-up, best cross, minimum putts and many more,' said Tapan Kumar Ghosh, the captain of the club.

To bag the hole-in-one prize, a golfer will have to send the ball to the hole in one strike.

The attraction of the tournament will be the traditional woollen jacket, which the winner receives after winning Kalyanpur Cup. 'Felicitating the winner with woollen jacket has been our tradition for the past 41 years. The cup of the annual tournament is called 'Kalyanpur Cup',' added Ahluwalia.

The prize distribution ceremony would be held on February 21 - the second day of the tournament - in the presence of Chief Justice of Patna High Court L. Narasimha Reddy. Actor-turned-politician Shaturghan Sinha would also be present. The winners of the third day's event would be rewarded separately.
