Patna, Aug. 15: Drains overflowing with excess water from the swollen Ganga and wastewater generated from the houses have inundated the upscale Patliputra Cooperative Colony.

The Ganga has been flowing around 30-40cm above the danger-level along Patna from August 11. This resulted in reverse flow of water through the drains connecting Patliputra Colony and the Ganga from Saturday. By Sunday morning, several internal streets and open grounds, including the Patliputra main field and the lawn and the tennis court of Bihar Lawn Tennis Association on Road Number 4A were inundated with river water.

Awadhesh Singh, a resident of the colony, said: "The water has entered several houses, especially located on the southern flank of Patliputra roundabout-Polytechnic Road. The stagnant water has started stinking and there is always a fear of reptiles."

Several residents complained about the callousness by the Patliputra Cooperative Society in running the pump houses to drain out the excess water. "When I enquired about the pump houses in the colony, I was told by the cooperative society that there was not enough diesel to run them. Besides, they are not operating the sewage sump houses as well," said Akhouri B. Prasad, another resident of the colony.

There are only two pumping stations of 40HP, considered insufficient to cater to the requirement of the colony in heavy rain.

On July 19, Patna divisional commissioner Anand Kishore directed PMC to prepare a short-term plan to tackle waterlogging in the colony.

Vishal Anand, executive officer of the New Capital circle, claimed that the civic body had not yet initiated any work to augment the drainage network.

Around 500 houses are built over 320 plots in Patliputra Colony. The society, registered in 1953, houses influential people like politicians, judges and bureaucrats among others.
