Patna: Tension is mounting at Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) as its students are up in arms against the appointment of P. Ishwara Bhat as the next vice-chancellor of the varsity.

The students alleged that Bhat has a tainted background and his appointment as VC will bring bad name to the institution.

Students who are protesting Bhat's appointment since Saturday evening, left their hostels and are camping outside the VC's residence.

Around 200 students, out of which around 20 are on a hunger strike, are demanding the cancellation of Bhat's appointment. The students are also against the university's move of giving extension to the present VC, A. Laxminath.

Sandeep Kumar, a student, said: "We are against the search committee's decision of appointing Bhat as VC as he has a tainted past. We have also come to know that some university officials are working for the extension of Laxminath. We are also against that."

Bhat is at present the VC of West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Calcutta. Bhat has faced two no-confidence petitions against him from NUJS student body.

The students alleged that at NUJS, Bhat faced charges of financial embezzlement, curbing student liberties, declining quality in faculty and lack of transparency in administrative work.

A probe against Bhat is on which is being supervised by the Supreme Court. The probe committee will submit its report in April.

The students have also decided to approach the chancellor, Patna High Court Chief Justice, Rajendra Menon, on Tuesday against the appointment of Bhat.
