Clearing the entrance exam to the most prestigious tech cradles is not enough for the students of Patwa Toli in Gaya district. Some of them want to serve the country by joining the civil services.
Patwa Toli, a locality under the Manpur block, has made a name for itself because of its students who have cleared the IIT-JEE over the years.
This year, too, 13 students from Patwa Toli have tasted success — Vinod Kumar, Khemchand Prasad, Shiva Kumar, Shivnath Prasad, Amit Kumar, Ranjeet Kumar, Aniket Gaurav, Deepak Kumar, Shashi Kumar, Nirbhay Kumar, Sujeet Kumar, Rahul Raj and Gopichand.
Some of them do not only want to pursue lucrative careers as techies, though. They hope to serve the society by joining the civil services.
Rahul Raj, who has secured 3464th rank in the Other Backward Caste (OBC) category this year, told The Telegraph: “A number of IIT alumni are in the civil services at present. After I complete my degree, I shall try for IAS (Indian Administrative Service).” His friends Sujeet and Gopi also said they wanted to become bureaucrats.
Only one student from the locality has succeeded in his pursuit of a bureaucratic career till now — Shyam Raj Prasad. Posted at Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu, he is an IRS (Indian Revenue Service) officer.
Patwa Toli has around 1,000 households, most of whom are patwas (weavers). Of them, 200 families have at least one weaver. Around 10 families have two IIT-ians each.
The success story Patwa Toli and its association with IIT began in 1996, when Jitendra Kumar became the first person from the area to qualify the tech test. Since 1999, at least 76 students from the locality have made it to the premier institute.
