Celestial show: When the moon put up a great gig in the sky on the night of Rakhi Purnima

Different stages of the lunar eclipse over Patna City on Monday night. A partial lunar eclipse was visible in Patna, setting in around 10.50pm on Monday night and ending around 2.20am on Tuesday. This was the first properly visible lunar eclipse this year. There had been a penumbral eclipse of the moon on February 11. That happens when the moon passes not through the direct shadow of the earth but through its periphery and is thus not discernible by a large section of the population. The next lunar eclipse will take place on January 31, 2018, and will be a total one. It will be visible from all parts of the Indian sub-continent. Text by Nishant Sinha, pictures by Sachin
