Patna, May 28: The state BJP unit has turned its focus to assessing the caste and social category of its 75 lakh primary members enrolled during the party's six-month-long membership drive.
To fulfil its objective, the party is getting a form filled from its active members. The single-page personal information form, apart from the name, mobile number, date of birth, address and educational qualification columns, has a separate column for caste and social category. The member has to fill his/her caste and category (general, Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and minority) to which they belong.
Sources said the party's idea behind filling the social category column was to know the demography of its members.
A BJP leader, preferring anonymity, said: "Traditionally, the BJP is known as a party of upper castes and also enjoy a good support base among Vaishyas (OBC) but lack support of the Scheduled Castes and minorities."
By knowing support base based on social demography, the party would get a picture about the communities supporting the members and understanding its weak and strong support base, which would give the central and state BJP leaders enough time to strengthen the weaknesses ahead of the Assembly elections. The Telegraph is in possession of the personal information data forms, which has to be filled by BJP members.
However, the form has become a weapon in the hands of the ruling JDU. Party state spokesperson Ajay Alok said: "While on one hand, the party claims Sabka saath, sabka vikas, it is secretly trying to get caste arithmetic supporting BJP." The leader added that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was saying that the people of Bihar should come out of caste barriers, the state BJP unit was working on a mechanism to assess its support base among different castes.
However, according to BJP state unit president Mangal Pandey, there is nothing wrong in seeking information about caste and social category. He said: "There are various columns, which a BJP worker has to fill such as education qualification, profession, areas of interest and if the party wants to know about social category, it is just a part of procedure."
In the first stage, BJP active members would fill the personal data form. Sources said around 5,000 forms would be distributed in each Assembly constituency. Taking the 243 Assembly segments into account, the party aims to distribute around 12 lakh forms.
The BJP central executive has planned the visit of Union ministers as part of Jan Kalyan Parva. Union minister of drinking water and sanitation Ram Kripal Yadav would highlight in Madhepura district, a known Yadav bastion, the first-year achievements of the Modi government.
Similarly, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi was given the task of highlighting the achievement of the NaMo government in Araria district, which has a substantial concentration of minorities. Samastipur, which has sizeable population of Dalits, Mahadalits and Extremely Backward Classes, the Union food and consumer affairs minister was given the task to highlight the Centre's achievements.
