Cabinet okays city's first private varsity

The cabinet on Tuesday approved the education department's proposal to set up the Patna campus of Amity University.

The cabinet on Tuesday approved the education department's proposal to set up the Patna campus of Amity University.

The cabinet chaired by chief minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday approved the proposal to set up Amity University's new campus in Patna. Amity University will function from a 6,000 square-metre building near Rupaspur in western Patna.

Cabinet coordination department principal secretary Brajesh Mehrotra said Ritnand Balved Education Foundation Defence Colony, Ring Road, New Delhi, has been given the provisional approval to set up the university.

The university will function from the building taken on lease. Two other campuses of the university are in Madhubani and Nalanda.

Amity University is the first private varsity, which offers professional and value-based education to the students, he said.

The cabinet also approved the science and technology department's proposal to set up Indian Institute of Information Technology Society, Bhagalpur.

It will pave way for the formal opening of IIIT, Bhagalpur, from this acade-mic session and enrol 83 students.

Mehrotra said the IIIT will be established on 50:35:15 mode, which means 50 percent of the cost will be borne by the Centre, 30 per cent by the state and 15 per cent by the industrial partner.

Beltron has been selected the industrial partner for the project.

The project will cost Rs 128 crore and the state sanctioned its matching share of Rs 44.8 crore for the IIIT, Bhagalpur.

The cabinet also cleared the proposal to upgrade 80 residential government schools for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe up to Class XII.

The cabinet nodded to the creation of 1,542 new posts of teaching and non-teaching employees in the schools. At present, the schools impart education to SC/ST students up to Class X.

The cabinet also sanctioned Rs 6,010 crore for implementation of chief minister accelerated seed programme, integrated seed programme and base seed grant programme in the state.

The cabinet also sanctioned Rs 150 crore to meet the establishment cost and other related expenditure of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sheikhpura (Patna).

The cabinet provided Rs 59.98 crore to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology, Patna, for construction of a new building after demolishing the old.

The cabinet approved the proposal to lease out government buildings and land for installing telecommunication towers.

A total of 28 proposals were passed on Tuesday.
