This recruitment season, students of Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Patna, could miss out on government job offers on the campus.
Engineering colleges, including National Institute of Technology, Patna, have written to public sector undertakings and invited them to conduct recruitments. These companies had stayed away from the first phase of recruitments at IIT and NIT last year following a court order. But they are reportedly keen to visit the institutions this year after the court vacated the order. But BIT-Patna, sources said, could miss out on recruitment visits from the public sector undertakings because they prefer the government institutions or the main campus of an institute.
A senior official in the BIT-Patna administration said: “As a rule, public sector undertakings prefer to visit the institution’s main campus, BIT-Mesra, rather than its extension centres. In such a situation, students from BIT-Patna or BIT-Deoghar are left with two options — visiting Mesra for the campus placements or clearing the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering — to enter these companies.”
Students can visit the mother campus only if it calls them for the recruitment process. A final-year mechanical engineering student said: “We have raised this issue before the authorities several times, but the institute pleads its helplessness.”
When The Telegraph contacted BIT-Patna director S.L. Gupta, he said: “I don’t have any idea whether the public sector undertakings would visit our institute this year or not.”
Only three public sector undertakings — Indian Oil Corporation, NTPC and (the erstwhile) Bihar State Electricity Board — visited the BIT-Patna campus between 2010 and 2012 to recruit students from the first three batches.
In the past month and a half, around 46 students of BIT-Patna have been recruited. Munish Taya, a electronics and communication engineering student who has been recruited by Verizon, said: “Generally they do not recruit students from my discipline. Our main recruiters are the IT companies.”
