Life for rape & murder

Patna: Additional district judge Perwez Alam on Wednesday sentenced four persons to life imprisonment for the gang-rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl on March 8, 2014. Shajad, Kamal, Pervez and Guddu alias Tuttu had dumped the child's body in a septic tank.

Eye pledge

Patna: District magistrate Sanjay Kumar Agarwal on Wednesday pledged to donate his eyes to the Rajendra Nagar Hospital's eye bank and urged people to give others the gift of sight.

Maoist rapists

Bettiah: Police in Kangli, West Champaran, have filed an FIR against five alleged Maoists for gang-raping a woman at gunpoint on Tuesday night after she refused to work for the outlaws.

Sushil salvo

Munger: BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi on Wednesday said though chief minister Nitish Kumar had initially backed demonetisation, his government is not taking any measures to promote cashless transactions in the state. The JDU, Sushil said, is under severe pressure from its alliance partners over the cash ban.

Sentence

Patna: Special CBI Judge Sarvajeet on Wednesday sentenced Praveer Gupta, former accountant with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation-Patna, and Calcutta-based transport business owner Krishna Kedia to three years' rigorous imprisonment in connection with the 1992 bitumen scam.

Bail rejection

Munger: Additional district and sessions judge (V) Jyoti Swaroop Srivastawa on Wednesday rejected the bail petition of Mohammad Lalatu alias Mohammad Iqbal, a resident of Mirzapur Bardhe village under Munger Muffasil police station, in a forgery case.

Powergrid

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday dedicated Powergrid's 765/400 KV GIS substation and associated transmission system to the nation at an event in Kanpur. The substation, located in central UP, will act as a gateway for transfer of power from the eastern to the western part of the northern grid.

Bank event

Patna: Union Bank staff recreation & welfare club Patna on Wednesday organised a badminton and chess competition at Moin-ul-Haq Stadium here. The winners of both events will be felicitated at the upcoming annual function of the bank.

Food fest

Patna: The Mumma's Club of Notre Dame Academy organised around 20 food trucks on Wednesday. More than 3000 students from classes I to XII attended the event, which also included game and music stalls.

Celebration

Patna: Jesus and Mary Academy students on Wednesday ushered in the Yuletide spirit with a pre-Christmas event. Around 300 students sang carols, and performed a one-act play of Jesus' birth in the manger.

I-T raid

Patna: Raghunath Choudhary, a trader from Supaul, suffered cardiac arrest soon after he received information that raids were being carried out at his go-downs by income tax department sleuths on Tuesday. Choudhary, who deals in spices and nuts, was admitted to a local hospital where he died on Wednesday. He had deposited Rs 2 crore in different bank accounts after demonetisation, prompting the I-T officials to conduct raids.

Shootout

Patna: Ajit Kumar Singh, manager of a petrol pump at Barh in the outskirts of Patna, was shot dead by unidentified armed criminals on Tuesday night. Police said the incident occurred when Ajit was returning home from work, but have failed to arrest anyone yet. Residents blocked the road and disrupted traffic for deteriorating law and order in the sub-divisional town.
