A teenager studying in Class IX of the CBSE-affiliated Delhi Public School allegedly attempted suicide on Thursday by jumping off from the top floor of the school building after a teacher threatened to suspend him, police said.

The incident took place around 11.30am, the cops told The Telegraph, adding that the family had not lodged an FIR till the evening.

The cops said the boy was undergoing treatment at the Paras Hospital in Patna and had suffered multiple fractures in his backbone and thigh.

Classes VI to XII are run at the senior section of Delhi Public School, where this incident occurred. The primary section campus is on Bailey Road.

None of the school authorities, including the principal, the school director, teachers and public relations officer, answered calls despite several attempts. Sahpur police station house officer (SHO) Vikas Chandra confirmed the incident.

"The boy is presently admitted in the ICU of the hospital. However, the boy has suffered serious injuries and is being treated. The father of the boy has told the police that he would not lodge a complaint unless he was sure that his son was okay and out of any kind of danger. For now he along with his family members is camping at the hospital," the SHO told The Telegraph.

"The father told the police that he had got a call from someone at the school who informed him about the incident. He told the police that according to the students, one of the teachers was taking the boy to the principal's office and had threatened to suspend him. The boy then suddenly freed himself and rushed to the top floor and jumped. There are many points which are to be investigated in this incident. The police are waiting for the family to lodge a complaint."

The Telegraph called up school principal B. Vinod many times but he didn't pick up. Several calls were made to school director Sanjeev Kumar and he didn't respond either. Some teachers who answered calls made to them said they didn't go to school today (Thursday) and hence had no idea about the incident.

A call made to the school's public relations officer, Chetna Jha, was answered by her husband who said she had gone out leaving her phone at home.

Jha was called yet again and her husband said she had gone to the hospital.

Patna SP (west) Satya Prakash said the school is yet to present its version of the incident.

"The police have got information about the incident and some say it was an accident," the SP said. "However, there is also a version that the boy jumped. There are CCTV cameras installed in the school and the SHO of the Sahpur police station has been asked to check the footage and find out what exactly happened. Also, the DSP (Danapur) has been asked to investigate the case and come with a detailed report on the incident."

The Paras Hospital, when contacted, refused to provide any information on the boy.

"My son is in the hospital and just regained consciousness," the boy's father told The Telegraph. "He said some students had made fun of a teacher but an English teacher by the name of Raju Ranjan targeted him. He told me that this teacher has a habit of targeting him and today beat him up badly saying that he (the boy) was fit for a government school. This led to my son jumping off the rooftop of the school."

He added: "I am busy with my son's treatment and once he is okay, I will lodge an FIR. I too want to know who is this Raju Ranjan; is he some kind of a dictator? The principal had come and he gave me my son's schoolbag but took away the school diary stating it was the property of the school. I was called by some school official around 12noon and informed about the incident."
