Vehicles fitted with tinted glasses and black films still enjoy a free run in the city in spite of a Supreme Court verdict against their use.

The apex court passed another order on August 3, warning senior policemen, including director-generals and commissioners in all states, for ensuring strict compliance of the ruling.

The Patna district transport office has swung into action on Sunday with black films and tinted glasses being removed from 23 vehicles. District transport officer Dinesh Kumar Rai said on Tuesday: “We are also sending letters to departmental heads, ministers and political leaders among other VIPs to remove the banned tinted films/glasses at the earliest.”

However, senior policemen claimed that they did not know anything about the apex court ruling. “I am not aware about whether a copy of the ruling of the apex court has been sent to the police,” said Ravinder Kumar, the additional director-general (headquarters) of police.

On the other hand, the Patna traffic police said they did not have necessary equipment required to measure opacity of window glasses in vehicles. “In absence of such an equipment, it would be difficult to undertake any drive,” said Patna traffic SP Chandrika Prasad.

According to sources, the equipment required for measuring tint/opacity in the vehicles is termed as tintometer. Tintometer is a precision instrument for comparing tints or colours and opacity.
