Patna: A day after Nitish Kumar raised the issue of special status for Bihar, the BJP on Wednesday maintained that it would stand with the chief minister in raising the demand before the 15th Finance Commission.

"We stand for rapid development of Bihar and for according special status to Bihar," Bihar BJP spokesperson Sanjay Tiger told The Telegraph on Wednesday.

He said that the 14th Finance Commission had been appointed when the UPA was in power and it had not accepted the concept of special status in its report.

"The UPA government had drafted the Raghuram Rajan committee which too didn't support the idea of special status. Now, all the NDA constituents will jointly raise this demand before the finance commission so that Bihar could get special status," Tiger said, adding that the party supported Nitish's letter to the 15th Finance Commission.

Senior BJP leader Nand Kishore Yadav too virtually seconded the views of Tiger.

"What is the point of objection in raising the demand before the Finance Commission? We all stand for development of Bihar," he said.

Yadav also maintained that the BJP had supported a resolution in the state legislature which talked of according special status to Bihar.

Yadav, at the same time, rubbished the Opposition's attack on the NDA over the special status issue, and said that they should not forget that it was during the UPA government that the 14th Finance Commission had been set up and it had not accepted the concept of special status to states.

Bihar BJP president Nityanand Rai also called on JDU national general secretary RCP Singh at Singh's residence here on Wednesday.

Though Rai didn't issue any statement about his meeting with the JDU leader, party sources said that the meeting was about the June 7 event in which all the NDA leaders from Bihar including Nitish are scheduled to take part.

The event has been organised to mark the four years of Narendra Modi government at the Centre, which the BJP is celebrating with gusto.
