Muzaffarpur, Aug. 7: The state police headquarters has sought a detailed report from zonal inspector-general (IG) of police Gupteshwar Pandey on the deputation of probationary police inspectors (PSIs) after a tailor was allegedly killed by a group of cops on August 5.

Abiding by the directive, the zonal IG has sent a letter to the deputy inspector-generals (DIGs) of Tirhut, Saran and Bettiah and the superintendents of police (SPs) of Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Siwan, Gopalganj, Chhapra, East Champaran, West Champaran and Bagha to identify the immature and short-tempered PSIs on field duty and send their details to the police headquarters immediately.

Suspended PSI of Town police station Sailendra Kumar Singh allegedly was responsible for the murder of the tailor, Mohammad Shamsuddin, on the campus of Dharam Samaj Sanskrit College at Rambagh in the district. Singh has been sent to Khudiram Bose Memorial Central Jail. The Mithanpura police have lodged a named FIR against Shailendra and five other cops, including two PSIs Raman Kumar and Suniti Kumari.

The zonal IG, after recommendations of the senior superintendent of police Rajesh Kumar and DIG (Tirhut) B.S. Meena, recommended dismissal of the tainted cop. Sources said director-general of police Neel Mani has approved the recommendation of the dismissal of Sailendra but has sought a formal proposal from Pandey to dismiss Shailendra.

Sources said the police department is anxious over the increasing cases of indiscipline among the newly appointed PSIs.

“The police department is set to shift such PSIs from the field as their presence was a cause of embarrassment to the police and the state government. It will be a wise decision to shift these cops from field postings,” Pandey said.

“After collecting details of these PSIs from the SPs concerned, a recommendation of their transfers can be sent to the police headquarters,” the IG said.

Pandey told The Telegraph: “It is true that the actions of some of the PSIs were posing law and order problems. They should be trained to behave properly and act according to the police manual.”

The IG added that the PSIs must be educated by the field police officers.
