Patna, Jan. 22: A person has been convicted within four-and-a-half months of a futile bid to murder a primary health centre doctor in Lakhisarai district.

The convict, Varun Kumar, was pronounced guilty and sentenced to 10-year imprisonment yesterday for the attack on Dr V.K. Mishra, posted at Suryagarha primary health centre, on September 9 last year. Lakhisarai additional district and sessions judge Manoj Kumar Verma gave the judgment in 134 days.

Dr Mishra had suffered bullet injuries in the attack. He was later flown to New Delhi for treatment. The incident had led to agitation by the doctors in Lakhisarai as well as other parts of the state. “The police submitted the chargesheet against the accused within 24 hours. The case was put on speedy trial,” said director-general of police Abhayanand. He said the state police headquarters was monitoring the trial on a day-to-day basis.

The accused, a resident of Shivpura under Suryagarha police station in Lakhisarai, was arrested within 15 minutes of the crime. The firearm used in the crime was also seized and sent for ballistic examination. While the chargesheet was filed on September 10, the charges were framed on September 15, 2011. The prosecution ensured deposition of witnesses on scheduled dates.
