Patna: The Bihar government on Tuesday suspended Muzaffarpur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Vivek Kumar, a day after raids were conducted at his official residence at Muzaffarpur and two locations in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh over a disproportionate assets case.

Muzaffarpur city superintendent of police Upendra Nath Verma has been given additional charge of SSP.

Top sources in the police headquarters said disciplinary action against Vivek, a 2007 batch IPS officer, was initiated after a preliminary report about his alleged involvement in corrupt practices was submitted to the government.

The search that started on Monday afternoon was continuing till late on Tuesday evening.

On Tuesday, the vigilance team stumbled upon the keys of six bank lockers during the search of Vivek's Muzaffarnagar residence.

"The search began around 4.30pm on Tuesday. The lockers will be operated upon in the presence of the family members," a senior vigilance official with knowledge of the raid told The Telegraph under cover of anonymity.

The search of the Muzaffarpur SSP's official residence yielded more cash on Tuesday, taking the amount to Rs 7.69 lakh while the value of the demonetised currency notes recovered went up to Rs 54,000. The team had seized jewellery worth Rs 6.25 lakh from the residence on Monday, the officer said, adding that the documents pertaining to plots of land at Sikarhara and Surendra Nagar in Muzaffarnagar district of UP were being verified.

A firearm wrapped in a towel was also recovered from the almirah of the confidential chamber at the SSP's residence.

"We are trying to ascertain who had kept the illegal firearm in the confidential chamber of the SSP," said an investigating officer. Muzaffarpur acting SSP Verma confirmed the seizure of the weapon from the SSP's residence.

Sources said at least half a dozen station house officers have fled from their police stations in the wake of the raid. These officers were considered close to Vivek.
