Patna: Former Jharkhand chief minister Arjun Munda, retired Patna High Court judge Samrendra Pratap Singh, director-general of fire-services, civil defence and home guards, Ravindra Kumar, will show their tee off styles at the 45th Patna Annual Golf Championship to be organised by Patna Golf Club from February 16 to February 18.
Around 250 golfers from Danapur, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Benaras, Jamalpur and Calcutta will participate.
"On the first day, the tournament is for ladies, senior golfers and 19-24 handicap golfers while day two will see participation by 0-18 handicap golfers," Patna Golf Club secretary Mohit Ahluwalia said. "Day II will also see a formal inauguration by our club president and Patna High Court judge Ravi Ranjan. There will also be a prize distribution for the first two days' events.
"Governor Satyapal Malik will hand over prizes. MP Shatrughan Sinha will be guest of honour. The winner of the first two days' event will be handed over a Kalyanpur Cup and a woollen jacket as per a 44-year tradition. The event will conclude with 9 Hole Stableford Chanakya Cup tournament."
"This event is an annual event of Patna Golf Club, established in 1916. This is the 102nd year of our club," Mohit said.
Patna Golf Club's history dates back to pre-independence era. Established in the year 1916, the club was initially known as South Bihar Gymkhana Club and was set up by Steuart Bayley who was the governor of Bihar. Baylay had entered the Bihar Civil Services in 1856 and he also held the portfolio of Commissioner of Patna Division in 1873. Initially East India Company officials used to play golf and polo in the Patna Golf Club course. The club has hosted many national championships since its inception. One has to give Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh as lifetime membership fee. The Who's Who of Patna are the members of this club .To promote the golfing skills among residents, the Club started a golf academy in 2012 which is also getting many students. Those who are interested in learning golf can go enroll themselves into a three month course and can learn the games from various experts at the club.
