A member of the bomb disposal squad defuses a "bomb" during a mock drill conducted at Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport on Wednesday by the airport authorities. Airport director Rajender Singh Lahauria received a "bomb threat" at around 3.40pm, as planned, on Wednesday. The Bomb Threat Accessment Committee met at the terminal immediately and carried out every possible action to thwart what they later found was a fake call engineered to carry out the drill. They deployed the dog squad, followed by detection of the bomb in the arrivals segment. The area was immediately evacuated and cordoned off and the state police were informed. State Bomb Disposal Squad personnel reached in about 25 minutes. The authorities made announcements over the airport public address system. Passengers waited outside for about 10 minutes while a fire evacuation drill was carried out at the arrival hall. The whole exercise was over at around 5.12pm. Lahauria said the drill was carried out according to the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security's instructions. Text by Piyush Kumar Tripathi, picture by Deepak Kumar
