Patna: The government on Tuesday filed an affidavit, telling the high court action has been taken against police officers who entered the Bhagalpur civil court premises last month and hit lawyers and court employees.
Chief Justice Rajendra Menon had earlier taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and converted the case into a public interest litigation. He directed the Bhagalpur district magistrate and superintendent of police to submit a report on the October 18 matter besides the registrar-general of the high court to call for a report from the Bhagalpur district judge.
Menon held prima facie the officers entering the court premises and assaulting advocates and employees - as reported in news papers - were not just an act of commission and omission but act detrimental to the interest of the administration of justice.
As damage control, Bhagalpur senior superintendent of police Manoj Kumar suspended six officers, including an ASI-rank officer, as the lawyers continued to blame the police. The District Bar Association also demanded immediate suspension of all the cops involved in the incident.
FIRs were registered on both sides, as advocate Dinu Kumar was appointed amicus curiae (friend of the court) to address the court on issues connected with the case.
In the affidavit filed on Tuesday, the government told the court that actions were being taken against the guilty officers and a few of them had even been suspended. The bench was also told that copies of both the FIRs had been forwarded to the state CID department that is looking into the matter.
The lawyers were allegedly attacked while they were protesting against police's failure to arrest those responsible in the murder of an advocate.
Mohammad Mazrul Haque had gone missing from the court on October 12 after attending a call. The next day, he was found dead.
