Patna, July 8: A girl lost her life after a late and secret abortion at a city-based private nursing home went wrong. The victim’s boyfriend, a buddy, the tout of the clinic and its four employees have been arrested.

The 20-year-old victim was a resident of Salimpur, Ara. An Intermediate passout of Magadh Mahila College, she was in a romantic relationship with Daldali Road resident 23-year-old Rohit Raj.

The victim had set out from her home at 3.30pm yesterday for the spoken English coaching classes. But instead of going there, she and her friend Tanya, a resident of Sultanganj area, went to Buddha Burn Hospital and Nursing Home in the Makhaniyakuan area for abortion.

Patna superintendent of police (city) Shivdeep Lande said: “Tanya had contacted one Mukesh Kumar, a tout of the nursing home, earlier. He suggested Tanya to go to the health hub for the abortion. Tanya took the victim to the nursing home two days ago. The doctors had prescribed her some medicines.”

The pregnancy was five-month-old and the medicines did not have any effect. So, the two of them turned up for an abortion yesterday.

Sources said the victim’s condition became critical in the course of the abortion, and the nursing home authorities, in a state of panic, asked her to leave. Tanya then called up the victim’s father.

Owner of a jewellery shop in Salimpur area, he rushed to the spot. He first took her daughter to Popular Nursing Home. The nursing home authorities refused to admit her and advised the victim’s father to take her to Patna Medical College and Hospital.

He took her to Magadh Hospital for better treatment. Unfortunately, when they reached the hospital, the doctors declared her brought dead.

A police officer said: “During the initial investigations, Tanya told the police that she was on her way to work when she saw a crowd at a little distance from the nursing home. Then, she saw the victim, who was unconscious, on the road. She then called up her father. However, during the course of investigation, Tanya confessed that she had accompanied her friend to the nursing home. Rohit and Mukesh were also with them.”

The victim’s father today lodged an FIR accusing Rohit of rape and murder of her daughter. Four officials of Buddha Burn Hospital and Nursing Home, as well as Tanya, Rohit and Mukesh have been arrested.

“Seven people have been arrested, including nurses Renu Devi and Kiran Devi, and nursing home employees Deepak Kumar and Soebal Nag. Tanya, Mukesh and Rohit have also been arrested. They have been booked under sections 376, 302, 313, 314 and 120 (B) of IPC. All these are non-bailable offences,” said Lande.

He added that the cops were also searching for Renu Chaudhury, the owner of the nursing home, and Vidyapati Chaudhury, its director.

A source said the police suspect that Rohit must have promised to marry the victim but later backed out.

“If she had to go for an abortion, she could have done so earlier. Rohit may have promised to marry her but later backed out. He was present in the nursing home at the time of the abortion but slipped away when her condition became critical,” said the source.

Lande said the police had asked the civil surgeon to provide the police with a list of private nursing homes in the city.
