Patna: A 65-year-old "religious teacher" identified as Mohammad Mozib-ur Rahman was arrested on Wednesday on the charge of raping a Class V student at a village in Darbhanga district, around 140 km northeast of Patna.

Police said that the girl, who suffered serious injuries in the assault, has been rushed to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where her condition was stated to be critical.

The incident occurred at a village under the jurisdiction of the Hayaghat police station on Tuesday.

The accused used to visit the girl's house around 9pm every day to give tuitions to her. On Tuesday too, he had gone to her home. Finding her alone, he allegedly assaulted her.

The girl suffered serious injuries to her private parts. Her parents were shocked to see her bleeding profusely.

The parents first admitted her to the local primary health centre, from where she was referred to the DMCH.

Hayaghat police station house officer (SHO) Dilip Kumar Pathak said the accused was arrested on Wednesday and produced in the local court, which remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.

"A complaint has been lodged under Section 376 (rape) and relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act," the SHO told The Telegraph over phone.

The girl's medical examination would be conducted after her condition improves. An investigating officer said her condition deteriorated due to excess bleeding.

The incident has sent shockwaves among the residents of the village, especially among members of the minority community.
