Calcutta, March 26: Subrata Sinha, 20, was arrested today on the charge of murdering volleyball player Sanghita Aich, 15, in Barasat, about 25km from the city.
Sinha has said that he only wanted to threaten the girl but ended up stabbing her to death in a fit of rage, police said.
"I had gone to the ground to threaten her but I was prepared for all kinds of consequences.... I don't repent anything," an officer quoted Sinha as saying.
Cops picked him up from his home in Jagaddal, North 24-Parganas, the morning after the murder and arrested him in the afternoon after a few hours of interrogation.
Aich, a Class IX student of Barasat Girls' High School, had represented Bengal in a national volleyball championship.
She was practising for a tournament along with others and their coach when Sinha attacked her yesterday.
Coach Swapan Das had said that Sinha stabbed the girl twice with a sharp weapon that looked like a dagger.
Sinha, himself a volleyball player, has said that he knew Aich for one year and did not like her budding friendship with others.
The police have booked Sinha under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC. If proved guilty, he could be sentenced to death or jailed for life and/or fined.
Sinha will be produced before the chief judicial magistrate in Barasat on Sunday.
The police have seized the weapon from a drain, about half a kilometre from the Notunpukur Association ground in Barasat where the girl had been stabbed.
The teenager's body was brought to her home in Notunpukur in the afternoon and cremated later in the day.
