May 10: Actor Vikram Chatterjee returned to Tollygunge police station today for a second round of interrogation, spending over three hours facing a four-member team that grilled him on the statement he gave last night about the car crash that killed model Sonika Singh Chauhan.
Police sources said several new strands of information, including a purported admission by Vikram of drinking on the night of the crash, emerged in the three hours and 25 minutes that he was questioned.
The actor had entered the police station at 1.45pm, just over 12 hours after his statement was recorded in the same room. Sources said the four-member team comprising an assistant commissioner, two inspectors and a sub-inspector focused on the contradictions between Vikram's statement and that of Sonika's friends who had spent time with the couple at the nightclubs before the fatal crash early on April 29.
Vikram was at the wheel of his Toyota Corolla Altis and Sonika was seated beside him when the car crashed near Lake Mall on Rashbehari Avenue that night. Sonika died at Ruby hospital soon after.
Metro spoke to investigators to find out what Vikram said today, if and how his statement differs from other versions and the questions that remain unanswered.
Drink driving
What he told police: Vikram was quoted as saying during the interrogation today that he had "consumed 30ml of liquor" on the night of April 28, contradicting what he had said at a news conference on May 5. "Vikram said he did drink that night but was not drunk. He specified that he had consumed 30ml of liquor," an officer said.
The permissible alcohol limit for driving is 30mg in 100ml of blood.
What police have found: Officers said Vikram consumed "two-and-a-half pegs of Old Monk rum" at the first nightclub he and Sonika had visited. Based on the statements by friends who were partying with the duo and bartenders at the nightclubs they went to, cops suspect Vikram had at least seven pegs of liquor.
A friend of Sonika had told Metro on Monday: "I saw Vikram drinking that night at Phoenix (The Astor)... he told me he was having rum with Coke."
What Vikram had said on May 5: Addressing a roomful of journalists, the actor had said: "I have been reading... that I was driving at a speed of 120 (kmph) and was drunk. Please let me tell you, none of this is correct."
Speed
What Vikram told police: An officer quoted the actor as saying that he was driving "at a little above 60kmph" when the Corolla Altis crashed.
What police have found: A preliminary assessment based on CCTV footage and other factors suggests that the car was moving at a speed of 104kmph immediately before the crash.
Unanswered question: The front of the Corolla Altis was mangled. Can a car crash at 60kmph cause so much damage?
The crash
What Vikram told police: The officer quoted him as saying that "the car skidded and I lost control".
What police have found: Investigators have yet to arrive at a conclusion on what triggered the accident. "We are waiting for the forensic reports," the officer said.
What Vikram had said on May 5: He evaded the question, saying his lawyers had advised him to share the details with the police first.
Unanswered question: What caused the tyres to skid and the car to hit the pavement?
Tiff whiff
What Vikram told police: The officer said Vikram contested speculation about a tiff between him and Sonika on the night of the car crash. "He said they left a nightclub and drove to his home in Kasba and spent around half an hour in the car chatting before setting off again. He said he was driving her home when the crash happened."
What police have gathered: Investigators said some of Sonika's friends had told them that she and Vikram might have fought over something inside the car.
Unanswered question: How did these friends come to know about any such tiff?
