Arun Ghosh, the sabhadhipati of the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad who rushed to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) where the injured were brought, said the passengers were from Helagach, a locality in Phansidewa block of the Siliguri subdivision.

“They were going to Thakurganj to attend a marriage. While moving along NH27 at Kantivita, the driver lost control because of over-speed. The pick-up van tumbled several times before coming to a standstill. Two persons have died,” said Ghosh.

Police reached the spot and with the help of local people, took the injured to the rural hospital in Phansidewa. Later, all of them were shifted to NBMCH for better treatment.

Soon after the accident, a video circulated, showing the pick-up van going off the road as the passengers fell from it.

Siliguri mayor Gautam Deb called on the injured at the NBMCH. “We have spoken to doctors who are treating the injured persons. An emergency help desk has been set up for them. We will extend necessary help to them.”
