Calcutta: Trinankur Bhattacharya will be the new state president of the Trinamul Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), party secretary general Partha Chatterjee said on Saturday.
Rumana Akhtar and Manishankar Mandal will be the vice-presidents, Chatterjee said while announcing Bhattacharya's name in Nadia.
Chatterjee, who is the education minister, was there to resolve the unrest at at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya.
Jaya Dutta, who was removed from the president's post in July, has been recommended for the post of the state general-secretary of the Trinamul Youth Congress, Chatterjee said.
Dutta, who was appointed the TMCP state president in 2016, was removed over allegations of malpractice in college admissions by Trinamul-backed unions.
Minister Chatterjee had then said Dutta's removal had little to do with the clampdown on irregularities in the admission process.
Dutta had succeeded Ashoke Rudra, who was president of the student wing from 2014.
The three new office-bearers are from groups opposed to Dutta, according to some in the party.
But the party leadership did not choose Lagnajeeta Chakraborty, the front runner for the TMCP post.
"The leadership struck a balance by naming Trinankur instead of Lagnajeeta," a party leader said.
"The balancing act was further established by the ascent of Dutta to the youth wing headed by Abhishek Banerjee," he said.
Bhattacharya's name had been, "more or less approved" on August 28, an hour after the TMCP foundation day event on Mayo Road.
Bhattacharya, a former student of Barasat University, is a member of TMCP state committee.
He came into prominence after his speech at the TMCP foundation day rally.
