Malda, Dec. 13: The Trinamul Chhatra Parishad unit at Gour Banga University was disbanded and 10 of its members expelled in the wake of the December 5 in-campus clash between two factions of the students' body to take control of a union room.
The move, announced by Trinamul district president Moazzem Hossain today, was unknown to TMCP district president, Prasenjit Das. All those turned out of the students' front are said to be close followers of Das as well as former minister and Englishbazar civic chief Krishnendu Chowdhury, according to party insiders.
The elections to the students' union for scheduled for next month.
The Raiganj College unit of the TMCP was similarly axed by the party in January 2012. On January 5 that year, TMCP leaders and members had dragged Raiganj College teacher-in-charge Dilip De Sarkar out of his office and manhandled him accusing him of partisanship before the students' union elections. Chhatra Parishad used be in control of the students union in Raiganj.
Hossain made the announcement in the afternoon at a news conference at the party office, but the TMCP district president said he was in the dark.
"I have come to know of this from mediapersons. I have conveyed the matter to TMCP state president Jaya Dutta, who also did not know about the development. The elections to the students' union in all colleges in our district are scheduled for January 14 and the decision is a surprise," Das said.
According to district Trinamul sources, Das, who is a close associate of Krishnendu, is in charge of the TMCP units across the district. "The disbanding of the university unit just before the students' union elections is significant. It comes at a time Krishnedu's wings have been clipped by the state leadership as he was told to step down as the Englishbazar civic chairman. All those expelled from the party were associates of Prasenjit Das," said a party insider.
Hossain made it clear that no form of indiscipline would be tolerated in the university. "Many of those who indulged in campus violence were not students. These outsiders entered the campus. Our party has not taken the incident lightly. Those expelled will have no place in any party organisation," Hossain said.
