Celebration of dance
To commemorate the birth anniversary of Jean-Georges Noverre, considered to be a great reformer of dance, The International Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI-Unesco) celebrates International Dance Day every year on April 29. This year, events related to International Dance Day in the city are being jointly organised by the department of culture, Government of West Bengal, West Bengal Dance Group Federation and West Bengal State Music Academy, with the active support of Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre. Today’s programme highlights dance activities in West Bengal, with special emphasis on the emerging breed of young and enthusiastic new generation of dancers. Beginning at 4pm with a film on Indonesian Dance, the evening session (at 6.30pm) commences with a short inaugural ceremony. To be followed by choreographic presentations by the trainees of a recently-concluded Seraikela Chhau workshop, conducted by Guru Brajendra Kumar Pattanaik. The programme will draw to a close with performances by various eminent dance troupes of West Bengal.

April 29 at Madhusudan Mancha; 6.30pm: Dhakuria Jeetendra Smriti Chakra presents a short play, Darpan Sakshi (written by Chandan Sen), and the one-act play, Nirastra (written by Amit Maitra). Direction: Binayak Bandyopadhyay. April 29 at Girish Mancha; 6.30pm: Charbak will stage Arindam Ganguly’s Rang.

Till April 30 at Purbashree, EZCC, Salt Lake; 6pm: Programme on Eastern Zonal Folk Culture, Guru-Shishya Parampara, an initiative by Government of India to revive folk dance and music. April 29 at Rabindra Okakura Bhavan, Salt Lake; 6pm: Srishtipath’s fifth annual function features recitation by the students of Nirmala Motijheel School, run by the Missionaries of Charity; audio-play Pratham Shok; songs by Anita Sarkar; recitation by Swapna Chakraborty; dance by Payel Roy and students of Monikuntala Uchcha Balika Vidyalaya; and drama Atha Swarga Bichitra by the members of Srishtipath. April 29 at 147 Barakhola, Mukundapur, EM Bypass; 3.30pm: The Aditya Birla Group and the Sankara Nethralaya have joined hands to augment eye care service in India. As a tribute to Aditya Birla, Sankara Nethralaya will be officially renamed Aditya Birla Sankara Nethralaya. Rajashree Birla, chairperson, Aditya Birla Foundation, Dr S S Badrinath, chairman emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya, and Sarala Devi Birla, trustee, Aditya Birla Foundation, will be present on the occasion.

LAUNCH
