In celebration of dance To commemorate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, considered to be a great reformer of dance, The International Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI-UNESCO) celebrates International Dance Day every year on April 29. This year, events related to International Dance Day in the city are being jointly organised by the department of culture, Government of West Bengal, West Bengal Dance Group Federation and West Bengal State Music Academy, with the active support of Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre and Indian Council for Cultural Relations. Today’s programme highlights dance activities in West Bengal, with special focus on the new generation of dancers. To be inaugurated at 10 am, the morning session features performances by various dance groups and also by children of well-known schools in and around the city. Santhal Dance Group of Birbhum will present an open-air performance at 4 pm. The evening session begins at 6 pm with a felicitation to French choreographer Gianin Loringett, who recently concluded an eight-day contemporary dance workshop with young dancers from all over the state. This will be followed by a presentation by the workshop participants and individual performances by dancers of Nritya Kalangan, Kalakshetram, Nritya Upasana, Poushali Mukherjee Dance Acadamy, Tarit Sarkar Ballet Troupe and others.
