Spiritual quest

The Telegraph Online Published 18.04.11, 12:00 AM
Spiritual quest
Perhaps one of the finest miniature artists in the country, the miniature landscapes of Bireswar Sen are indeed poems in colour. In the limited space of 2 1/2 inches x 3 1/2 inches (the average dimensions of his works), he has shown infinite distances as well as lofty Himalayan snow peaks resplendent with the chromatic effects of sunset and sunrise. As part of the annual exhibition of the Museum and Art Gallery of the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, the Bireswar Sen Family Trust presents, for the first time in Calcutta, Pilgrim of Eternity, the ongoing show of 100 never-before-seen miniatures in watercolour by Sen. The exhibition symbolises a voyage into the spiritualism that Sen’s art embodies; a rendezvous into the abyss of the unknown and the re-definition of the known. It is this devoutness to his craft that elevates his work to that of mystical masterpieces. Sen was deeply influenced by the celebrated Russian painter, Nicholas Roerich, who propelled his interest in landscape painting. Interestingly, however, in contrast to the paintings of Roerich that are full of the sweep and the majesty of the mountains, Sen painted on a small, almost minuscule, scale but with no absence of grandeur, no loss of stateliness.

Event: An exhibition of miniature watercolours by Bireswar Sen When: Till April 23; 10am - 1pm & 2.30pm - 7pm Where: Museum and Art Gallery, Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Gol Park
