Slices of life on stage
A much-anticipated annual event in the city’s cultural calendar since 1984, Nandikar’s National Theatre Festival has, over the years, grown to be a prestigious event of national importance, participated by leading theatre troupes of the country and, occasionally, from abroad. This year’s festival features plays by groups from Assam, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa and West Bengal, as well as by Prachyanat troupe of Bangladesh. The 27th edition of the festival, to be inaugurated today at 6 pm, commemorates the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore... A New Sonata, a compilation of some of Tagore’s raga-based songs set to orchestral music, will be presented after the inaugural ceremony. Performers include Debojyoti Basu (sarod) and Bickram Ghosh (tabla).

December 16 & 17 at Rabindra Sadan complex & auditorium: Rabindra Sadan & I&CA department is organising Poush Utsav featuring tagore songs, dances, recitation along with various forms of folk songs of Bengal amidst a handicrafts fair and Poush-parbon delicacies. Today, 4 pm: Road rally of dancers, singers, elocutionists and folk artistes starting from Rabindra Sadan complex. At Rabindra Sadan auditorium, 5.30 pm: Tagore songs by Rajeshwar Bhattacharya, Ashis Bhattacharya, Pramita Mallick, Indranil Sen, Supratik Das and others; dance-dramas Kabitanjali by Upasana Centre for Dance and Biswabina Robey by Saraswat; and recitation by Kallol Dey, Suparna Mazumder, Bhuma Chakraborty, Rita Das and Jayeeta Dashgupta. BOOK LAUNCH

December 16 at British Council, L&T Chambers, First Floor, 16 Camac Street; 7 pm: British Council and Prabha Khaitan Foundation host the launch of Journeys, a compilation of short stories, poetry and reportage by writers connected to the South Asian Diaspora, using the theme of journeys as a starting point. A special prize will be awarded to the best writer, Hema Raman of Chennai. Birminham poet laureate and story-teller Adrian Johnson will speak on the occasion.
