The human predicament

The Telegraph Online Published 14.02.11, 12:00 AM
The human predicament
What do we want from life? To be happy, of course, is the answer. Philosophers, however, say that happiness comes from the fulfilment of pent-up desires. Happiness, too, is temporary, as man’s needs and desires never end. Yet man cannot shake off the pursuit of happiness. He is forever in a bind and looking for ways to obtain some satisfaction: some compensation for what he has to repress in order to live in a society that forces him to repress his innate desires. This sums up the theme of Brothers in Harmony, the ongoing exhibition of masks and paintings by Dr Sudeep Ranjan Sarkar and Debajyoti Basu Rakshit. Featuring works in pastel, charcoal, acrylic on handmade paper and watercolour, along with face masks, the exhibition reflects the eternal human condition. Focusing on the life force and imbalances of everyday life, the works depict man trying to find a semblance of harmony from it. They deal with man’s search for purpose, sense of curiosity, the inevitability of isolation and his fear of death. At the same time, they also try to portray a seamless integration of life force for a richer and fuller life.
