Sketches and silhouettes
A penchant for experimenting with monochromes and light-and-shadow distinguishes the art works of Priyanka Majumdar and Amrita Bagchi. These two young artists are part of Asthir, an art collective started by a group of friends who want to showcase their works in various cities across the country. Described as “art on the move”, the ongoing show features a series of photographs by Majumdar and a number of pen-and-ink portraits by Bagchi. Majumdar’s photographs focus largely on the use and interplay of shadows on normal, mundane objects most people would not notice. The series Din (meaning, day) consists of photographs of sunlight and shadows playing off old staircases, a shadowy, yet striking outline of a cycle-rickshaw and some interesting photographs of the photographer’s own shadow caught on bamboo stalks. Bagchi’s series of paintings, which has been digitally coloured and grain rendered, comprises unusual graphics of women and androgynous figures set against stark, bold backgrounds. Her works deal with themes of urban alienation and restlessness, and offer melancholic or poignant images that startle the viewer into realisation. lEvent: An exhibition of digital art works by Amrita Bagchi and Priyanka Majumdar lWhen: Till March 18 (except Sunday and holidays); 11am - 7pm; Monday, 3pm - 7pm lWhere: Studio21, 17L Dover Terrace
