Adventure tales with a twist
Author of well over 200 books, Sunil Gangopadhyay is a prolific Bengali writer who has excelled in different genres including poetry, novels, travelogues, children’s fiction, short stories, features and essays. Though most of his works in children’s fiction gained great popularity, his best-loved creation is perhaps the character of Kakababu, the crippled adventurist, who is always accompanied by his teenaged nephew Shantu and the latter’s friend Jojo. Since 1974, Gangopadhyay has written over 35 novels of this popular series, most of which have appeared in the children’s magazine, Anandamela. This evening, eminent poet Nirendranath Chakravarti will launch The Dreaded Beauty (translated by Nirmal Kanti Bhattacharjee) and The King of the Verdant Island (translated by Tridiv Chowdhury), English translations of Sunil Gangopadhyay’s famous Kakababu stories. Gangopadhyay himself, Nirmal Kanti Bhattacharjee and Gautam Ghosh will be present on the occasion. Hosted by Starmark and Ponytale Books.
