Celebrating Suchitra

The Telegraph Online Published 07.04.11, 12:00 AM
Celebrating Suchitra
She is easily the most popular actress of Bengali films, ever. Her ethereal beauty, coupled with her phenomenal screen presence and immense box-office popularity, particularly her on-screen chemistry with Uttam Kumar, have given her a cult status in Bengal. Throughout their film career, the pair became icons of Bengali romantic melodrama for more than two decades, developing a unique genre of films by themselves. To celebrate Suchitra Sen’s birthday (April 6), Nandan, West Bengal Film Centre and Tapan Sinha Foundation host Periye Elem, a three-day festival of films starring Suchitra Sen. To be screened today are Sagarika (4pm) and Bhagvan Srikrishna Chaitanya (6pm), the latter following the inaugural function. April 8: Hospital (4pm) and Deep Jele Jai (6pm); April 9: Devdas (4pm; Hindi) and Saat Paake Bandha (6pm). An exhibition on Suchitra Sen is also being hosted at Nandan IV (April 7 -10; 3pm - 8pm) to mark the occasion.
