Celebrating Tagore
To commemorate Tagore’s 65th death anniversary, department of information and cultural affairs, government of West Bengal and Happenings host Rabindra Utsav, a rediscovery of his plays through multilingual interpretations directed by nationally acclaimed directors. The festival marks the maiden celebration of an annual cultural event in which a distinctive form of the numerous creative genres explored by Tagore will be showcased. It commences this evening with the staging of Dakghar (direction: H. Kanhailal), presented in Manipuri by Kalakshetra, Imphal. Also featured are Raja (August 4; direction: K.N. Panikkar), presented in Malayalam by Sopanam, Trivandrum, Raktakarabi (August 5; direction: Suman Mukhopadhyay), presented in Bengali by Tritiyo Sutra, Calcutta and Raj-Rakt (August 6; direction: Habib Tanvir), presented in Chattisgarhi by Naya Theatre, Bhopal. All plays will be staged at Rabindra Sadan at 6.30 pm. Apart from them, there will be opportunities to interact with directors on their productions a day after their performance, at Bangla Akademi Sabhagriha, 11 am - 1 pm. Samik Bandyopadhyay will moderate all sessions. Supported by Airtel.
