Masters as the muse
In its effort to bring quality art to the forefront, Gallerie 52D is committed to discovering promising young artists and helping them find a platform to showcase their works. Ode to Masters, the inaugural exhibition hosted by the gallery, is intended as an invocation to celebrated masters of earlier eras to inspire aspiring, contemporary artists with their creative vision. Comprising paintings, sculpture and graphics by early 20th century masters including Nandalal Bose, Jamini Roy and Biren De, as well as renowned senior painters and sculptors of the present age, it brings together the best of both traditional and modern Indian art. Featuring the works of Dharmanarayan Dasgupta, Thota Vaikuntham, Lalu Prasad Shaw, B.R. Panesar, Prakash Karmakar, Paritosh Sen, Subrata Gangopadhaya (one of his paintings appears above), Chandra Bhattacharjee, Kartick Pyne, Jogen Chowdhury, Monoj Mitra and others.

August 5 at Uttam Mancha; 6.30 pm: Bhavna presents Tagore songs by Manoj Murali Nair and Manisha Murali Nair. Also, Kathakali (Karna Kunti), Keralanatnam by Kalamandalam Murali and Bhama Murali.

August 1 at Chakdaha Ramlal Academy, Chakdaha, Nadia: Centenary celebration of Chakdaha Ramlal Academy begins with flag-hoisting and procession (at 10 am) and cultural function (at 6.30 pm).

friendship day

August 1 at National Library, Bhasha Bhavan auditorium; 3 pm: The National Library of India, ministry of culture, government of India and Academy of Bengali Poetry will celebrate International Friendship Day with authors and publishers. Artists Jogen Choudhuri and Rabin Mondal will be awarded. Also, a poetry-reading session.

August 1 - August 3 at Nandan II: Nihongo Kaiwa Kyookai and Consulate General of Japan, Calcutta host the 15th Cinemanippon ? Japanese Film Festival. Today: A Summer Page (4 pm) & I Are You, You Are Me (6 pm). Till August 3 at Gorky Sadan; 6 pm: Consulate General of Italy and Eisenstein Cine Club host Centenary Tribute to Luchino Visconti and Roberto Rossellini through a festival of films. Today: The Earth Trembles.
