A Spencer’s outlet has opened in the interiors of New Town, bringing relief to residents of the housing complexes of the locality.

The outlet is on the ground floor of DLF New Town Heights Plaza, opposite the Shapoorji Pallonji complex in Action Area 3. A convenience store of around 10,000 sq-ft, it stocks up on daily need items. It has a kitchen and bathroom section, fruits and vegetables, meat and fish, groceries etc.

There are two other Spencer’s outlets in New Town — in Axis Mall and City Centre 2 — but they are of the bigger hypermarket format and so also stock electronics, apparel etc. Salt Lake’s AMP Vaisaakkhi mall has a Spencer’s convenience store.

“While sales in our stores in other parts of Calcutta are growing at a 14 per cent an annum, those in New Town are growing at 20 per cent. This clearly goes to show the potential of this part of town. New Town is set to be the next Gurgaon,” said Lakshman Nagar, vice-president, leadership in asset maintenance, building and space, Spencer’s, at the opening.

As per their estimates, the Shapoorji Pallonji complex alone has 4,000 families while the other neighbouring ones have about 300. “By opening this store here we have tried to come closer to the shopper,” said Nagar.

The store opened at 11.45am on August 5 and by 1pm there were eight customers in queue in each of the four cash counters. “This store is a boon for us,” said Simran and Amartya Roy, pushing a cart loaded with biscuits, sauces, lentils, detergents, etc. “Previously we would depend on the Spencer’s at Axis Mall but since we travel by bike it would be tough to carry home too many items. But today we came walking.”
