The Calcutta Municipal Corporation will soon introduce a surcharge, an additional tax over property tax, for residential properties that have been rented out. Mayor Sovan Chatterjee made the announcement during a board meeting of the corporation on Wednesday. The corporation at present only draws a surcharge on commercial establishments in residential buildings. Chatterjee, did not mention the quantum of surcharge for residential tenants.
A bike-borne traffic sergeant chased down a youth moments after he snatched a mobile phone from a girl at Mukundapur off the Bypass on Wednesday. Police said the girl was talking on her phone when a cyclist snatched it from her. The girl’s screams alerted the sergeant who was off duty.
