Calcutta: Aashna Surana, the teenager critically injured in the Ferrari crash on June 3 that killed a Calcutta businessman, received an unusual birthday present on the eve of turning 18 last week.
The gift, a video clip sent by Aashna's brother, showed their aunt Madhu Surana at Mahadevi Birla World Academy to receive an award on her behalf for scoring 96.5 per cent in the CBSE Class XII examination.
For Aashna, who is recuperating in Singapore, just being able to see a recording of the event left her "happy and touched".
"Her father and grandfather also missed the event, so they were on a WhatsApp call with her brother Akshat to know what was happening on the stage. Aashna was resting then and watched the recording later," Madhu said.
Aashna needed surgery on her right leg at CMRI Hospital around a month ago and was on a ventilator for some time before being flown out to Singapore.
Her 18th birthday last Sunday wasn't quite the celebration she would have had in normal circumstances, but the Surana family is grateful that Aashna has recovered enough to cut a cake and have a slice.
The invitation from Mahadevi Birla World Academy had come around 10 days before that and, according to a family member, it brought Aashna immense joy.
"Thanks to all your prayers, she is doing better. She is not here with us this morning but we have a member of her family with us to receive the award on her behalf. Young Aashna, know that we will always pray for you and for your family to stay strong in this hour of crisis," Anjana Saha, the principal of the school, said at the felicitation.

"Thank you, parents, for your support and your prayers and am sure they have gone a long way in healing Aashna and it will further strengthen her to come out of this crisis stronger, better and younger than before."
Businessman Shibaji Roy was driving the Ferrari California-T convertible with Aashna seated next to him when it crashed into the parapet of a flyover on National Highway 6. Aashna, the daughter of Roy's friend Adarsh Surana, had swapped places with his son for the return journey to Calcutta from a highway cafe. Adarsh was driving a BMW.
