A 14-year-old boy fell from the footboard of a bus while getting off on Bidhan Sarani on Thursday evening. Jeet Jana, a student of Hindu School, was taken to a government hospital with injuries on his face. The driver fled with the bus.

Shanty fire

A fire broke out in some shanties on Belgachhia Road around 4.55am on Friday.

Two fire tenders reached the spot and doused the flames within an hour. Some meter boxes were damaged, the police said. No one was trapped or injured. The area has been sealed off for forensic tests.

Murder charge

Calcutta police are likely to submit two chargesheets in a day or two in connection with the murder of a 65-year-old woman, who was found with her head severed at her Garcha First Lane home in December, sources said.

One chargesheet will name the victim’s 38-year-old daughter-in-law and her male friend, 22, who was arrested from Punjab. The other will name the victim’s granddaughter, who was earlier presumed 18 but was later proved a minor.

Biker held for cop assault

A motorcyclist was arrested for allegedly assaulting a traffic sergeant who tried to stop him when he was driving rashly in the Survey Park area on Thursday. Based on sergeant S.K. Dhak’s complaint, officers of Survey Park police station arrested Dipankar Das.

Treatment order

The high court on Friday ordered the enforcement directorate to arrange for treatment of an accused in the Rose Valley money laundering case, who has vocal chord cancer. The court, however, refused the bail plea of Arun Mukherjee, who was a director of Rose Valley. “The ED is directed to take all measures so that the accused can be admitted to any superspeciality hospital for the treatment of his ailment. The cost of the treatment will have to be borne by the ED,” said Justice Shivkant Prasad. ED had arrested Mukherjee in 2016.

Naval orchestra

The Indian Naval Symphonic Orchestra comprising over 80 naval musicians performed at Kala Mandir on Thursday and Friday. Over 3,400 schoolchildren and others attended the performance.

Conference

The eastern regional council of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India is holding a two-day conference titled Sustainable Development through Inclusive Growth Rising from the East at the Swabhumi auditorium from Friday.

Student visa

Over 37,500 Indian students received a study (tier 4) visa from the UK in 2019, a 93 per cent increase from the previous year. UK Immigration Statistics published on Thursday said this was the largest number of visas issued to Indian students over the past eight years.
