The body of a man in his mid-30s was found floating in the Hooghly in the South Port area on Wednesday morning.
A probe indicated the man — who the cops identified as Sutirtha Bhattacharya, a resident of Durgapur — was studying LlB in Kharagpur. There was no external injury on the body, which was spotted by residents and workers.
Jawed Shamim, the joint commissioner (headquarters), said: “We identified Sutirtha from a receipt from a Kharagpur ATM found in his wallet.”
The police contacted Bhattacharya’s house in Durgapur’s Bidhan Market and alerted his family members. “The relatives are yet to reach the city and identify the body. Descriptions by family members matched the victim’s profile,” said an officer of South Port police station.
