April 14: Engineering student Raj Jaiswal died in a motorbike crash in Golf Green while returning home after watching Thursday night's IPL match.
Police said the 22-year-old, who was riding a Royal Enfield Classic 350, veered off Uday Shankar Sarani in front of Doordarshan Kendra and crashed into a tree on the median divider.
A helmet was found 50ft from the spot but the police were not sure whether the youth was wearing it.
Raj's father Ramesh Kumar Jaiswal, a businessman, said his son and a friend had gone to Eden to watch the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab.
He left his Baguiati home in the afternoon, saying he would meet a friend in south Calcutta and then go to Eden. The police alerted the father about the accident at 2am.
Raj, a final-year student at a private engineering college in Dum Dum, was the only son of the Jaiswals. He had recently started an online share trading business and set up an office on College Street.
The police said Raj had parked his motorcycle at his friend's house in Aurobindo Nagar, close to Golf Green.
"Raj Jaiswal and his friend headed for Eden or Park Street. They either watched the match at the stadium and then dined at a Park Street restaurant before heading for Aurobindo Nagar or watched the match and dined at a restaurant on Park Street," an officer of Jadavpur police station said.
"The accident occurred around 1.30am, while Raj was returning home on his bike from Aurobindo Nagar."
A resident of the area who witnessed the accident said the biker, speeding towards the Lords Bakery crossing, mounted the median divider and rammed into the tree. The bark of the tree peeled off under the impact of the crash.
"The biker slumped to the road with a thud. He was bleeding profusely. Bloodstains on the road were there even this afternoon," the resident.
A patrol van of Jadavpur police station, which was on Uday Shankar Sarani when the accident occurred, took the victim to MR Bangur Hospital in Tollygunge, where doctor declared him dead.
Bike accidents have become common on the streets of Calcutta.
Actor-guitarist Ronodeep Bose, grandson of thespian Soumitra Chatterjee, met with a bike accident in New Alipore on March 31 night.
He suffered critical injuries and is battling for life at the Institute of Neurosciences, Calcutta.
