Siliguri, July 14: Students of Siliguri College topped in eight out of 21 undergraduate courses of North Bengal University in the Part-II honours examinations this year, the results of which were declared today.
The performance of the institute this year has proved what educationists had been claiming for quite some time. Even yesterday, The Telegraph had reported (Rush for seat in Siliguri colleges) that improved standard of education in the college was drawing huge crowds.
Leaving 72 other NBU affiliated colleges behind, the students of Siliguri College scored highest in economics, geography, journalism, Hindi, chemistry, computer science, physics and zoology .
?Though we find evenness in the results this year, the students of Siliguri College have again proved their mettle,? said P.K. Saha, the vice-chancellor of NBU at a news conference today. ?However, it is good to find that students from other colleges have topped in other streams, which indicate that level of education throughout north Bengal is improving fast.?
This year, 6,798 students had appeared in 13 undergraduate courses in the arts stream, 727 in seven courses in science and 734 in the commerce stream.
The pass-percentage, as NBU sources revealed, has been 81.57, 78.18 and 75.55 per cent in arts, science and commerce respectively, with 5,545, 568 and 554 students passing the exams in the three streams.
?The pass-percentage has remained more or less the same compared to last year. But the achievement on our part is that through a concerted effort of all our staff, we have succeeded in publishing the results within 42 days of the completion of the theoretical papers and within 13 days of the completion of the practical examinations,? said Dilip Kumar Sarkar, the controller of examinations, NBU.
However, results of 29 candidates could not be published, as they are yet to clear the ?pass? subjects of the Part-1 examination.
About subjects like Bengali, English, history, political science, Hindi and sociology, where none of the students have bagged first class, the vice-chancellor said: ?We will sit and discuss with professors and examiners as to what has led to such low marks in these subjects.?
Charts at NBU indicated that the highest score of 569 (out of 800) in arts has been recorded in economics while in science the highest score of 588 was recorded in microbiology.
In commerce, however, the highest score remained above the other two streams with a student of Birpara College securing 648.
NBU officials also mentioned that the admission notice for post-graduation courses would be published tomorrow and forms distributed till July 24.
Regarding reassessment of answer scripts, Sarkar said: ?The students need to submit the applications for reassessment by July 29. We will keep some seats in the post-graduate courses for them so that they can take admission in case their marks are at par.?
