Guwahati, Sept. 21: Binod Kumar Roy will be the next chief justice of Sikkim High Court.

Roy, at present the chief justice of Gauhati High Court, will assume the new office on or before September 30.

The appointment ends the suspense over his continuation as the chief justice of Gauhati High Court. Roy?s short eight-month tenure was marked by controversy.

Roy?s transfer was notified yesterday by the Union ministry of law and justice (department of justice) immediately after receiving the President?s assent.

The countdown to Roy?s transfer began on July 12 with 15 of his 17 fellow judges formally complaining to the chief justice of India about his conduct, which, they alleged, was unbecoming of a judge and a blot on the judiciary. A similar complaint by 151 high court lawyers bolstered the case against one of the seniormost judges of the country. Roy was also accused of often making last-minute changes in the causelist, which details cases to be taken up in a day and in which room, throwing the court into turmoil.

Sources said a stormy welcome awaits Roy in Sikkim with the government there opposing his appointment.

Roy was not available for comment.
