Malda, April 26: Congress leaders who are closely campaigning for Mausam Noor in Malda North are pulling out all stops to see to it that there is good attendance at Sonia Gandhi’s rally in Samsi tomorrow.
In 2004, Sonia had been at the Samsi College grounds, 50km from here, to campaign for Priya Ranjan Das Munshi. Although part of the Malda district, the Assembly segments of Samsi, Harishchandrapur, Ratua and Kharba were under the Raiganj Lok Sabha seat before delimitation.
“Those who were given the responsibility of bringing supporters to Rahul Gandhi’s meeting in Englishbazar on Friday did not do their job properly. Transport was not arranged to bring our supporters. We are making sure that this is not repeated tomorrow. The meeting is scheduled at 12.25am and I am hopeful that the turnout will be good,” Mausam said today. By 1.40pm, the Congress president is expected to reach Islampur in North Dinajpur where she will address a meeting in support of party candidate, Deepa Das Munshi, Priya Ranjan’s wife.
Mausam said external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee and Murshidabad district Congress president Adhir Chowdhury had already visited her constituency. “Pranabmama will come once more and I have been assured by Mamatadi (Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee) that she, too, would come to Malda North,” said Mausam. Her uncle Abu Hashem Khan Chowdhury has been fielded from Malda South, which was visited by Rahul Gandhi on Friday.
Sonia’s tour tomorrow starts with Lalgola in Jangipur — Mukherjee’s constituency — where she is expected at 11.00am.
