Jalpaiguri, Jan. 11: The Jalpaiguri Consumers? Protection Society has alleged that a section of medicine sellers were charging sales tax on contraceptive and life-saving drugs in contravention of a government circular.

The Bengal Chemists? and Druggists? Association (BCDA) has denied the allegation.

?We have found out that the circular restricting the imposition of sales tax on contraceptives and 42 enlisted life- saving drugs has failed to prevent a section of chemists from charging sales tax on these drugs and earning the proportionate extra amount,? alleged Gautam Deb, the general secretary of the society.

Denying the allegation, Subhasish Ghosh, the zonal secretary of BCDA, said: ?We have never heard consumers complaining. Our members always abide by government rules. In case, any of us are found guilty, he will face the consequences.?
