Raiganj, July 18: BJP MP Roopa Ganguly and her supporters held a demonstration in Karandighi today after police prevented them from meeting two tribal girls who had been allegedly molested at Raiganj bus stand on July 9.

The law enforcers stopped Roopa and around 100 BJP members at Siliguri More in Karandighi.

The MP and the supporters jostled with the police demanding entry to the nearby village where the two victims reside.

Roopa left the spot and led a demonstration in Karandighi to protest the police action.

Later, the MP headed for Raiganj.

"We were stopped by the police and administration to conceal their failure to keep law and order. Four women were tortured at a prominent location of the town and yet, the police have no clue. We doubt whether the police have arrested the real culprits," she said here.

On July 9, two tribal women had been molested at the bus stand here by three men who were arrested on the same day.

Later, it was found that the same men had detained and molested two adivasi girls also at the bus station.

Around 20,000 adivasis took out a procession here on Friday to protest the molestation and allegedly ransacked a number of shops. The local traders observed a 48-hour strike that ended on Sunday to protest the vandalism.

So far, seven persons have been arrested in connection with the molestation, a police source said.

Amit Kumar Bharat Rathod, the superintendent of police of North Dinajpur, said: "They were stopped to prevent any further breach of law and order in the district."

Karandighi is 40km from here.

For the past couple of months, the BJP has been giving impetus to North Dinajpur district, an observer said.

"This has started after the Left and the Congress performed pathetically in the civic polls in May and lost to Trinamul. Many workers and leaders have started deserting these parties and so, like Cooch Behar, the BJP wants these people on board," the observer said.

"Now, that four tribal women were molested, Roopa Ganguly has turned up. The BJP has adopted a strategy of standing by the affected people and mounting pressure on Trinamul. Such moves are being made by the party at a time there hasn't been any major political activity by the CPM and the Congress on such issues at the local level," the observer said.

Sources said Roopa was also scheduled to visit the two other victims but was told by the police and administration that she would be stopped again.

The sources said she would leave for Siliguri in the evening.
