Park Circus: The west-bound flank of Circus Avenue was closed on Monday to allow construction of the last ramp of the Parama flyover. The stretch had earlier been closed to traffic in mid-May but was opened during Durga Puja.
Vehicles headed towards Minto Park from the Park Circus seven-point crossing will have to take Shakespeare Sarani or Park Street. If a vehicle reaches the point where the road has been closed, it will be diverted via West Range Road, a police officer said.
Circus Avenue is the road going towards Beckbagan from Park Circus but only the stretch between the crossings with Congress Exhibition Road and Beckbagan Row will remain shut. The other Park Circus-bound flank of Circus Avenue is open.
The road has been closed to build piers for the 1,100m ramp that will diverge from the Parama flyover near Topsia police station and run over Congress Exhibition Road, Nasiruddin Road and a stretch of Circus Avenue before merging with the AJC Bose Road flyover at the Beckbagan crossing. This is the last ramp of the Parama flyover.
"We have allowed only 15 days for work to be completed," said a police officer.
Only the foundation of the ramp piers are being built at present. But the stretch will have to be closed again when other structures such as the deck slab - the surface of a flyover on which vehicles run - are erected. "We will need to close the stretch again for three or four months from December or January," said an official of HCC, the private company building the ramp.
The road closure caused snarls on Monday. The ripple effect was felt on Parama flyover that had to be shut to traffic from the Bypass several times in the day. "I tried to take Parama flyover around 3.30pm from near Silver Spring but it was closed. I went towards Ambedkar Bridge and found the ramp from that side open. It took me over 15 minutes to reach Park Circus," said a man from Salt Lake.
