Cooch Behar, Dec. 26: The registrar of Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV) rejoined work today, prompting the officers, teachers and non-teaching employees of the university to lift the ceasework that had been going on since December 5.

The protesters, supported by the students, had been demanding that the registrar, Parimal Chandra Sarkar, be reinstated after the vice-chancellor sacked him on December 4.

The UBKV Officers’ Association, the main architect of the agitation, said it would continue with its protests against the vice-chancellor, Mrinal Kanti Majumdar, whose decision to sack the registrar was overturned by the Bengal agriculture department on Monday.

Safiar Rehman, the vice-president of the officers’ association, said starting from tomorrow, members would shout slogans against the vice-chancellor and bring out processions during the 30-minute lunch break everyday.

“The registrar’s return is a major victory for us and therefore we are withdrawing the ceasework,” Rehman added.

Sukumar Saha, the secretary of the employees’ association, said: “The vice-chancellor has no moral right to remain at the UBKV. It is because of him that studies and research at the university has had to suffer.”

Majumdar had handed Sarkar a letter on December 4 that said the latter’s services were no longer required.
