Former Calcutta police commissioner Rajeev Kumar filed an appeal in Calcutta High Court on Monday challenging an Alipore court’s rejection of his anticipatory bail plea in connection with the Saradha probe.

Kumar’s wife Sanchita Kumar came to the high court and affirmed his petition. The vakalatnama attached to the petition bore Kumar’s signature, court sources said. The plea is likely to come up on Tuesday before a division bench headed by Justice Sahidullah Munshi.

The CBI counsel claimed that they had not been served any notice about Kumar’s fresh bail plea.

“The high court will not take any decision on Kumar’s petition without hearing our view,” a CBI lawyer said on Monday.

Soon after Kumar’s petition was submitted, a team of CBI officers met the additional-solicitor general at his office in the high court while another team, comprising the Saradha probe officers, consulted CBI counsel Y.J. Dastoor.

On Monday evening, a third team went to Kumar’s Calcutta residence at 34 Park Street.

Sources said the CBI had summoned Kumar in connection with the Rose Valley probe on Monday but he failed to turn up.

Agency officers said they had gone to his home to serve a fresh notice seeking his appearance.
